Meet the Face Behind Yonge Eglinton Periodontics
My name is Dr. Andrew Kay, and I am the owner of Yonge Eglinton Periodontics, which was founded in 2004. At YEP we pride ourselves in ensuring that our patients feel warmly cared for and that all treatment options have been thoroughly explored and explained. To give you some background about me, I graduated from dental school in 1999 and went on to complete my master’s degree and residency (specialty in periodontics) in 2002. Both of my dental degrees are from the University of Toronto.
I began YEP with the intention of providing the best periodontal and dental implant care possible in a warm, caring environment. This goal remains true to this day. My entire team recognizes the stress that can accompany dental treatment and we have always strived to ensure that every visit is both relaxed and efficient as possible. It perhaps sounds cliché, but we do treat every patient as we would our own family.
The dental industry has significantly changed throughout the years and YEP has kept up with the times, especially when it comes to keeping current with the latest dental technology and methods. For many years the practice was just myself, a single practitioner with one or two hygienists. That number has increased because of demand, and maintaining a stellar reputation over the years. We now have three periodontists and two to three hygienists per day in the office. To meet the increasing demands of our office, our staff has also gotten bigger in numbers, by taking on additional front desk staff and dental assistants. This has helped to ensure that our office continues to run smoothly and efficiently. We believe it is better to be over staffed than under. However, with that all said, we do still consider ourselves a boutique style practice. Another perk to our office is that we have always maintained fair fees because it is important to us that patients are able to afford their necessary treatment without the pressure of the expense.
Another part of my business that I pride myself on is our philosophy. Basically, it is to treat people how I would want to be treated if I was in their shoes. I am quite aware that gum treatment and implant therapy is not cheap. For many people it is quite a large investment. I do my best to explain to people what I feel is immediately necessary for their oral health, versus what can be staged over time, and what can be monitored.
I never realized how big of an impact I would be able to make on somebody’s life by replacing a tooth with an implant, maintaining teeth that would otherwise be lost to gum disease, or just by helping someone be happier with the aesthetics of their smile. All these things have made my life’s work rewarding to this point. Some of the most satisfying moments in my business have been seeing the unsolicited feedback patients have written for YEP on google reviews. Reading the words of appreciation by a patient who mentions the office staff by name and the care they received means the world to me. Of course, I am not all work and no play! I’m extremely passionate about staying fit and it is one of my top priorities. I enjoy road cycling and sports and combining fitness with fundraising for a variety of causes. I have completed the ride to conquer cancer almost ten times. In my free time I also love spending time with family and have been brushing up on my culinary skills as often as possible. For an amateur, I’m not too bad!
